Coil mattress:

Most coil mattresses are constructed with large re-enforcement wires, fully encircling the mattress, top and bottom, to give it stability. Therefore it was never meant to bend.  In spite of that, the coil mattress remains the mattress most used for the adjustable bed today. Old habits die hard. Fortunately, that's slowly changing as more and more people are switching to foam. Soon, coil mattresses, for the adjustable bed, will be a thing of the past.
We've used many different coil mattresses in the past but have never found them very satisfactory. Most coil mattresses are flat bed mattresses that have been altered to work on an adjustable bed.
  • The re-enforcement wires are cut away from the sides or removed entirely (so that the mattress will bend)

  • Coil count is reduced or a lighter gauge wire is used.

  • Quilting is usually done on one side only; they tell you it's so that you can have firm on one side and soft on the other, when actually it's so that the mattress will bend better.

In other words, they take a perfectly good mattress apart and remove the very things that made it a perfectly good mattress in the first place, leaving the consumer with less mattress for a more strenuous job.

Ask yourself this question:

If all that re-enforcement is needed for a flat bed mattress that doesn't require bending, how come it's not needed for an adjustable bed that is constantly bending?

Of  course, the answer is, it does.

One more thing; when a coil mattress bends, it bunches up in the small of the back area. People with lower back problems often wake up with a very sore, tired back.

The Air Mattress:

We experimented with different air mattresses for the adjustable beds some time ago and found a couple of main problems:
  1. Each time you put the bed up or down, you have to adjust the air accordingly, otherwise it becomes very uncomfortable. For instance, if you wanted to read or watch TV in bed, you have to let some air out then replace it later when you're ready for sleep; a real nuisance.

  2. The air pump was very noisy especially in the middle of the night.

It's been some time since we've tried air mattresses on our adjustable beds, things may have changed somewhat, but it's doubtful.

Latex:

We carry Latex mattresses. Latex  is an excellent mattress for either a flat bed or an adjustable bed. They are  a bit pricey but most people who have used Latex find its worth the extra money.

Cheaper Foam:

All foam mattresses are not the same. A foam mattress can be the cheapest or the most expensive of mattresses. So don't be fooled.

This was said earlier in this program and it's worth repeating:

(Many tests are used to determine the quality of  foam but for the average person buying a mattress, density is by far the most important guide. Most  people  relate density to firmness, and that  is totally incorrect. Density is measured by the pounds per cubic foot, (PCF)  Other foam  mattresses can be extremely firm with very little density; causing it to break down very quickly.)
Deal with a reputable company who will stress the quality and density (not firmness) of the foam. It will be a little more money, but in the long run you'll be much happier.
